Before You Seek a Grant: A Checklist for New Nonprofits

This course is geared towards representatives of community groups without nonprofit status or new nonprofits with very little experience in grantseeking in general. We focus specifically on foundation fundraising.

The course will address such questions as:

  • What groundwork do I have to have in place before approaching foundations for funding?
  • What are the steps to obtaining incorporation and nonprofit status and where can I get some help to do so?
  • What are the characteristics of successful nonprofits?

This free session will provide you with a step-by-step checklist approach to help you determine your own readiness for foundation fundraising.

Special presentation on March 10!
Following this class on March 10, join us for a special presentation on understanding the IRS Form 1023. This course is geared toward individuals who are interested in applying for 501(c)(3) status for a nonprofit organization and will address questions in regards to:
  • "Magic language" which must be used in the 1023
  • Writing addendums for the 1023 application
  • Top 5 pitfalls of nonprofits that can delay approval of the 1023 application

Presenter: Kelli Byers Hooper, Esq., Partner at Hooper & Honore, LLC

Kelli Byers Hooper, Esquire, practices law in the Atlanta metro area with Hooper & Honore, LLC. Kelli is a frequent lecturer on the topics of nonprofit governance and nonprofit formation. She currently sits on the board of directors for several Atlanta nonprofits, including Living Room, Atlanta Nonprofit Professionals, and Cascade Community Services.

Kelli graduated from the University of Denver with a major in Biology and minors in Chemistry and English. She received her Masters in Public Health from UCLA and worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a Public Health Prevention Service Fellow. She attended Samford University's Cumberland School of Law and clerked for the Southern Poverty Law Center, the nations largest nonprofit law firm.
