This election season is the best time to advocate for a change in our legislators' understanding of the arts. Education is the only way to protect state support for the arts industry. That support will be the result of local efforts in local communities.
From now until the election in November, candidates are focused on getting elected. You, your board, and your audience are their constituents. Candidates want to meet you, engage you in conversation, and garner your positive view of their capabilities, knowledge, and position on the issues.
In this program, Susan Weiner, executive director of the Georgia Council for the Arts, will discuss GCA’s Advocacy Initiative, which will deliver recommended steps to be taken, by whom and how, and will provide as many resources as possible to complete the activities successfully. This program will precede the Resource Market for the Arts.
Presenter: Susan Weiner, Executive Director, Georgia Council for the Arts.
Susan Weiner was appointed executive director of Georgia Council for the Arts in 2004. Under her direction, the agency has granted funding to all 159 counties in the state, successfully providing access to the arts for all Georgians. As a state arts administrator, she has been a guest speaker for many events and organizations, including the Arts in Crisis program with Kennedy Center president Michael Kaiser, the GACAA Annual Conference, and numerous chambers and convention and visitors bureaus. Additionally, she has served as a resource and arts advisor for several media outlets, including the Associated Press.
Mrs. Weiner holds degrees in theatre arts and education and has worked as a professional stage actress both regionally and internationally. Prior to accepting her appointment with Georgia Council for the Arts, she was an entrepreneur whose management consulting company, Weiner Associates, worked with clients such as the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, General Electric, and the state of New York on training, strategic planning, fundraising, and partnership development. Her career also includes serving as mayor of the city of Savannah from 1992-1995 and as a counselor for the Small Business Development Center at the University of Georgia.
