About the Organization:
Crossland Karate, Inc. (CKI), was formed as a community outreach organization focusing on providing martial art training to children and young adults within the metro Atlanta area to those who could not afford to pay for lessons at more expensive karate programs. It was incorporated in 2003 in Fulton County.
CKI considers themselves not only a provider of professional karate training, but also an advocate for community development. It takes pride in the community and the people that live in the surrounding area and has a civic duty to help strengthen the community by focusing on the youth and their development. Its philosophy is to work in partnership with the students, school system and the community to help mentor and guide young students in their growth and development over the long term.
The founder, Master Percy A. Brown, a certified 5th Degree Black Belt and Certified Examiner, has extensive experience working in the public schools and community. Mr. Brown also works as a substitute schoolteacher for Fulton County Schools. He has worked with students to build their self-esteem and increase their awareness of their roles and responsibilities within the classroom, at home, with peers, and in the community. The program does not end when class is over at the end of the day.
The program has no limitations in terms of who can participate. Participants include every age group starting at 4 years, male or female, from any level of health or athleticism. Crossland Karate offers free demonstrations at local community events, e.g., fall festivals, school events/open houses, strip malls and local park demonstrations.
Current Programs: One of CKI's earliest programs is an After School Martial Art Enrichment Program at High Point Elementary School in North Fulton County, which is still in operation, to serve youth needing additional guidance after school, during the summer and on weekends. In addition, CKI has provided martial art training to the Fulton County After-School Odyssey Program, YMCAs of Greater Atlanta, Horizon Summer Program, and numerous community-based organizations over the past six years. Professional training, quality supervision, peer interaction programs, tests, and tournaments are provided for all groups.
CKI also provides a high-quality martial art and computer training program at its studio location in East Point, GA. It has partnered with 5R Processors Ltd. to facilitate a computer training and free distribution center for impoverished residents of Georgia. Crossland Karate's Reinvestment Goal for 2006 is to assist 5R Processors in launching a nationwide effort to bridge the Digital Divide for people with incomes of $25,000 or less who live in inner cities or impoverished communities.
Crossland Karate, Inc. serves more than 60 students, and they demonstrate positive attitudes and are committed to being the best persons they can be. Many of our students are presently involved in positive activities in their schools and communities. To date, we have ten Honor Roll students and have graduated another five students as certified Black Belts within our program. Three of our Black Belts are under the age of 14. CKI has two State Champions (a 10-year-old male and a 50-year-old female) while other students hold numerous first place trophies and awards in regional martial art competitions.
Goals for program expansion include:
After school tutoring in literacy and homework
Intervention training for troubled youth (such as suspended youth, at-risk youth, high school dropouts)
Computer training for post-high school adults
Senior citizen programs, including low impact fitness, Internet use, youth mentoring, and social activities like bridge and arts and crafts
CKI's long-term goal is to establish a facility that will serve the community during days for young adults and seniors, after school for school-aged youth, evening and weekends for all ages, and school-aged youth during the summer.
Funding Needs: CKI has been funded through personal investments of Percy A. Brown and Jackie Oliver, both of whom are investors and operators, and tuition paid by students who can afford to pay. CKI will continue to focus on martial art training until suitable funding sources are found to further the goals of its programs. Its immediate funding needs are for training equipment, uniforms, and facility rental fees.
