Grants That Make a Difference
"Grants that Make a Difference" highlights grants given to Southeastern organizations that have helped make a difference in people's lives. Getting the grant is only the beginning of the story. At least once a month, "Grants That Make a Difference" will profile these important grants and what their recipients are doing with them.
L. Austin Weeks, a retired petroleum geologist and business owner, has made a $10 million gift to the South Miami
Hospital Foundation, the largest donation ever received by Baptist Health South Florida, the Miami Herald reports.
The donation will fund a new clinical area equipped with electrophysiology and angiography equipment; an outpatient
cardiac-rhythm-management clinic for the diagnosis and management of heart rhythm problems; and physician and public
education resources dealing with heart rhythm disturbances and their treatment. Construction of the area is part of the
current renovation and expansion of the hospital's heart center.
In announcing the gift, Weeks cited Dr. John R. Dylewski, a specialist in cardiac electrophysiology at the hospital who
treated him for an abnormal heart rhythm. Weeks and his wife are longtime benefactors of the University of Miami and other
philanthropic causes in the South Florida area.
