The Healthcare
Georgia Foundation in Atlanta has announced over
$600,000 in grants to ten programs and organizations
across the state.
The
foundation, which was created in 1999 with an endowment
from BlueCross and BlueShield Georgia, works to advance
the health of all Georgians and to expand access to
affordable, quality health care for underserved individuals
and communities. Recipients of this round of grants
include AID Atlanta, which received $100,000 to support
the continued operation of its on-site HIV Testing &
Counseling Clinic and to expand outreach and oral testing
efforts among underserved high-risk populations in metro
Atlanta with an emphasis on the Latino population; Albany
Area Primary Health Care, Inc., which received $100,000
to support the provision of primary healthcare services
for the poor and underserved in five counties in Southwest
Georgia; and Good News Health Center, which received
$80,000 in general operating support to bolster its
capacity to absorb a 25 percent annual increase in its
multi-cultural, multi-racial, and multi-lingual patient
population in Gainesville and Hall County, Georgia.
"Having completed our first statewide listening tour this summer, the foundation gained
invaluable insight to the real health challenges that Georgians face everyday and have
used this information in our grantmaking to better serve communities," said foundation
president Dr. Gary Nelson. "Given the state of both the local and national economy and
rising healthcare costs, it is likely that even more Georgians will need access to these
critically important programs and organizations."
