Grants That Make a Difference
"Grants that Make a Difference" highlights grants given to Southeastern organizations that have helped make a difference in people's lives. Getting the grant is only the beginning of the story. At least once a month, "Grants That Make a Difference" will profile these important grants and what their recipients are doing with them.
Thomas K. Glenn is this year’s recipient of the Philanthropist of the Year presented by the Greater Atlanta Chapter of
the Association of Fundraising Professionals (see
profile in “Grantmakers in the News”).
He was nominated by The Westminster Schools and the Center for the Visually Impaired because of his major philanthropic
support of these organizations.
Thomas K. Glenn’s $5 million gift to The Westminster Schools in Atlanta created the Wilbur and Hilda Glenn Institute for
Philanthropy and Service Learning. The overlay of learning on philanthropic service is the key for Glenn’s philanthropy,
and the Glenn Institute will serve as the focus for the coordination of the school’s existing and future programs under one
umbrella to maximize impact.
Glenn also made two transforming gifts to the Center for the Visually Impaired in Atlanta. These include a $100,000
grant for an enhanced development initiative, which allowed CVI to invest in greatly expanded efforts to generate support
for CVI, and a $200,000 challenge grant to match the gifts of new and lapsed donors.
