"Grants that Make a Difference" highlights grants given to Southeastern organizations that have helped make a difference in people's lives. Getting the grant is only the beginning of the story. At least once a month, "Grants That Make a Difference" will profile these important grants and what their recipients are doing with them.

At its National Philanthropy Day Luncheon on November 18, the Greater Atlanta Chapter of the Association for Fund-raising Professionals will honor Sarah and Jim Kennedy as the 2003 Philanthropists of the Year in recognition of their many contributions to their community. The PATH Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a comprehensive network of trails throughout metro-Atlanta and Georgia to provide citizens with more outdoor recreation space and improve community spirit, nominated the Kennedy's for this honor in appreciation of the instrumental part they have played in this organization's success.
Sarah and Jim are committed to improving the quality of life in Georgia through the support of their community, particularly environmental initiatives. Since 1994, Jim Kennedy has chaired three successful PATH capital campaigns, which have raised over $30 million (in public and private funds). Sarah Kennedy launched PATH's first membership campaign in 1995 (now with more than 4,100 members) and has chaired several annual fund campaigns. This year, Sarah chaired Piedmont Park Conservancy's Landmark Lunch, which honored PATH. Together, they have been instrumental in establishing PATH as an organization and making greenway trails available for millions of Georgians.
Thanks to the Kennedys' leadership, PATH has built more than 60 miles of trails (linear parks) in Georgia and is in the process of building an additional 35 miles with the funds raised in PATH's most recent campaign. The Kennedys have provided funding to PATH personally and through Cox Enterprises, the James M. Cox Foundation, James M. Cox, Jr. Foundation and Spray Foundation.
In addition to their commitment to PATH, the Kennedy's are being honored for leadership and support of organizations such as the Robert W. Woodruff Arts Center, High Museum of Art, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters, Forward Arts Foundation, the Alzheimers' Association, Ducks Unlimited, the Women's United Soccer Association, Wetlands America Trust, Inc., GCAP, Multiple Sclerosis Society of Georgia, Piedmont Park Conservancy and Kennesaw State University.
