Grants That Make a Difference

September 1, 2006

"Grants that Make a Difference" highlights grants given to Southeastern organizations that have helped make a difference in people's lives. Getting the grant is only the beginning of the story. At least once a month, "Grants That Make a Difference" will profile these important grants and what their recipients are doing with them.

The Jackson, Mississippi-based Foundation for the Mid South has announced $500,000 in matching funds from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in Princeton, New Jersey, to enable it to offer grants to community-based health care providers assisting vulnerable populations in hurricane-affected areas.

The grant matches a contribution from Baxter International and will benefit the Baxter International Foundation Health Recovery Fund, which has already awarded $250,000 in operating support to health-related organizations in the region to re-establish their services. In the upcoming grant cycle, the Mid South Health Initiative Advisory Committee will identify local service providers and develop the grants process for the matching funds. The committee of health practitioners and leaders from Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas was established in January 2006 to determine priorities and procedures for addressing health service problems in the Gulf Coast region.

"By utilizing FMS's experience and existing networks...we can expect an efficient grants process that will distribute funds to organizations in the hardest-hit areas in a fair and equitable manner," said Dr. Ivye Allen, president of the Foundation for the Mid South. "With this generous funding, we hope to restore the network that delivers essential services and addresses the enormous health and human services needs by those displaced and laid low by the storms."

The Foundation for the Mid South is a nonprofit regional development foundation established in 1989. The foundation invests in people and strategies that build philanthropy and promote racial, social, and economic equity in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation focuses on pressing health and health care issues facing the U.S. They work with a diverse group of organizations and individuals to identify solutions and affect change in the health care resources available to Americans.

The Baxter International Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Baxter International. The foundation helps organizations increase access to healthcare in the U.S. and around the world.
