Grants That Make a Difference

"Grants that Make a Difference" highlights grants given to Southeastern organizations that have helped make a difference in people's lives. Getting the grant is only the beginning of the story. At least once a month, "Grants That Make a Difference" will profile these important grants and what their recipients are doing with them.

Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers has received a $5 million grant from the Whitaker Foundation in Arlington, Virginia, for its engineering degree program that is expected to begin accepting students in fall 2005.

The funds will support the construction of a 50,000 square-foot facility for studying bioengineering, engineering management, and civil and environmental engineering. The university will ask the state of Florida to match the gift dollar-for-dollar from the Alec P. Courtelis Facility Matching Program to bring the total for construction to $10 million. It plans to construct the school of engineering building near the Whitaker Hall for Math, Science, and Technology Education, which opened in April 2001.

The engineering school will initially reside in the College of Business before it becomes a College of Engineering. "The business community advised us that civil engineering, specifically focused on the needs of southwest Florida, is one of the most valuable engineering majors we could have in the new school of engineering," said Richard Pegnetter, dean of the college of business.

The School of Engineering will add a needed component to the development of the technology and research infrastructure in Southwest Florida that should contribute to and diversify continued economic growth in the community.
