Grants That Make a Difference

"Grants that Make a Difference" highlights grants given to Southeastern organizations that have helped make a difference in people's lives. Getting the grant is only the beginning of the story. At least once a month, "Grants That Make a Difference" will profile these important grants and what their recipients are doing with them.

Wachovia recently announced that it awarded grants totaling $14.9 million to twenty-three organizations in eleven states as part of its Wachovia Teachers and Teaching Initiative. Grant sizes ranged from $300,000 to $750,000 and will be awarded over a three-year period, pending semiannual progress reports.

Created in 2004, this initiative provides funding through the Wachovia Foundation to organizations that enhance teacher recruitment, development, support and retention with the goal of increasing student achievement.

“At Wachovia, we believe that every child is entitled to a high-quality education, said Mike Rizer, director of community relations at Wachovia. “With the Wachovia Teachers and Teaching Initiative, we can focus our giving on an area experts say is key to creating positive change in the classroom—teacher quality.”

The Wachovia Teachers and Teaching Initiative is the most recent example of Wachovia’s ongoing strong commitment to education. Under the initiative, grants are made to organizations that:

  • Provide high-quality professional development opportunities and support for educators
  • Create world-class learning environments that are responsive to the needs of students from diverse backgrounds
  • Strengthen the infrastructure of the teaching profession through leadership and best practices by hiring and securing high-performing educators
