Rollins College, in Winter Park, Florida, has announced a $93.3
million bequest — the largest gift in its 119-year history — from the philanthropist George Cornell.
The bequest from Cornell, the son of a founder of IBM and the nephew of the founder of Cornell University, includes
$10 million to fund a scholarship in memory of Harriet Cornell and $10 million to endow the Rollins presidency, the first
endowment of its type in the United States. The remaining $73.3 million will be used to endow faculty chairs, scholarships,
and other academic initiatives.
Cornell, who died in 2003, graduated from Rollins in 1935 and was a trustee of the school for more than twenty years. He
and his late wife, Harriet Wilkes Cornell, made substantial gifts to Rollins throughout their lives.
"This extraordinary bequest provides the financial resources to assure in perpetuity the highest-quality education for
Rollins students," said Rollins president Rita Bornstein. "What an incredible legacy!"
