Grants That Make a Difference

"Grants that Make a Difference" highlights grants given to Southeastern organizations that have helped make a difference in people's lives. Getting the grant is only the beginning of the story. At least once a month, "Grants That Make a Difference" will profile these important grants and what their recipients are doing with them. Alliance Theatre

The Kendeda Fund of the Metropolitan Atlanta Arts Fund, a program of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, made a gift of $1.5 million to the Alliance Theatre in early May to finance the Theatre’s National Graduate Playwriting Competition in perpetuity.

In 2003, the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta established the Graduate Playwriting Competition, in which approximately 20 graduate playwriting programs across the U.S. are invited to have their final-year students submit a play for professional review. An Alliance-selected panel chooses five finalists, whose works are then reviewed by a national panel of three theatre artists. The winner is selected in collaboration with Alliance Theatre leadership. The Alliance produces the play and provides the playwright with the opportunity to work with a nationally recognized director and a cast of professional actors. The first winner was an historical drama set in Cuba, Day of the Kings by Daphne Greaves of the Juilliard School, and was performed on the Hertz Stage at the Alliance early in 2005.

The other four finalists have their work exposed to theatre directors through readings and other events in the hopes that other organizations will be interested in producing one of the plays. Actor’s Express in Atlanta selected a musical, Love Jerry, from among last year’s finalists for staging this past January.

This grant ensures the continuation of this innovative program to identify new playwriting talent and bring these unknown playwrights into the professional arena. The gift will also provide a stipend for the playwrights to assist them with expenses. In honor of the Fund’s generosity, the Alliance Theatre has renamed the program as the Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition.
