Grants That Make a Difference

"Grants that Make a Difference" highlights grants given to Southeastern organizations that have helped make a difference in people's lives. Getting the grant is only the beginning of the story. At least once a month, "Grants That Make a Difference" will profile these important grants and what their recipients are doing with them.

The National Endowment for the Arts provides national recognition and support to significant projects of artistic excellence, preserving and enhancing our nation's diverse cultural heritage. The Endowment was created by Congress and established in 1965 as an independent agency of the federal government. Since then, they have awarded more than 111,000 grants to arts organizations and artists in all 50 states and the six U.S. jurisdictions.

The National Endowment for the Arts is the largest single funder of the nonprofit arts sector in the United States. Their grants to organizations in a particular state can make a significant impact on the arts community there. In 2002, for example, the NEA awarded 16 grants for a total of $2,005,600 in the state of Georgia. Grants awarded in Georgia included:
  • $7,000 to the Lowndes/Valdosta Arts Commission in Valdosta to support a series of exhibitions primarily featuring the works of regional artists
  • $25,000 to the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta to support puppetry productions and associated educational activities.
  • $20,000 to Columbus State University in Columbus to support a staff development course for teachers focusing on Southeastern Indian culture, a program for school children, an academic symposium, and a Southeastern Indian Heritage Day.
  • $24,000 to Southern Arts Federation in Atlanta, Georgia to support the initial phase of a long-term program to provide assistance, education, information and resources to the region's traditional artists in Spanish-speaking communities.
