Grants That Make a Difference
May 1, 2007
"Grants that Make a Difference" highlights grants given to Southeastern organizations that have helped make a difference in people's lives. Getting the grant is only the beginning of the story. At least once a month, "Grants That Make a Difference" will profile these important grants and what their recipients are doing with them.
The Charlotte-based Bank of America Charitable Foundation has announced a $6 million capacity-building grant to Habitat for Humanity International in Americus, Georgia, to increase the nonprofit organization's capacity to provide quality, affordable housing for families worldwide.
Marking the twentieth anniversary of the bank's partnership with Habitat, the grant will be used for general operating support and to finance home construction and renovation. Bank of America recently completed the McColl sponsorship program, begun under former chairman and CEO Hugh McColl Jr., which enabled the Jimmy Carter Work Project to construct fourteen houses in Charlotte.
Since 2002, Bank of America has contributed more than $10 million to Habitat, including $850,000 to Operation Home Delivery, the organization's hurricane recovery project. "Over the past five years, more than twenty thousand Bank of America associates have volunteered their time, and the bank has committed millions of dollars, to provide hundreds of families a place to call home," said BoA chief financial officer Joe Price. "I cannot think of a better way to celebrate opportunity than to honor the completion of the McColl program and renew our commitment to building homes in partnership with deserving families across the country."
"With this gift, Bank of America is committing to grow our long-term partnership and further declares that poverty housing in our cities and our world is not acceptable," said Jonathan Reckford, CEO, Habitat for Humanity International. "We're grateful not only for the resources that will substantially impact our work, but also for the enthusiasm with which Bank of America leadership and employees everywhere continue to embrace our
mission by volunteering, donating or otherwise furthering Habitat's efforts in their communities."
Habitat for Humanity is a global home-building movement comprising more than 2,300 local affiliates, state support organizations and national organizations in nearly 100 countries around the world, including all 50 states of the United States, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico. Completing a home somewhere in the world every 21 minutes, Habitat for Humanity builds nearly 25,000 homes per year.
Since its founding in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has built and rehabilitated more than 225,000 houses with families in need, helping address the issues of poverty housing. The organization has provided more than 1 million people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter.
