"Grants that Make a Difference" highlights grants given to Southeastern organizations that have helped make a difference in people's lives. Getting the grant is only the beginning of the story. At least once a month, "Grants That Make a Difference" will profile these important grants and what their recipients are doing with them.

The CDC
Foundation, a nonprofit organization that
raises funds for the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, has
received a $2.8 million grant from the Ellison
Medical Foundation in Bethesda, Maryland,
to support a CDC program in Kenya that trains public
health professionals to track and respond to emerging
infectious diseases.
The grant will support two-year training opportunities
for eleven epidemiology and ten laboratory fellows
over four years. CDC has been working to address
emerging infectious diseases, including newly identified
infections and those that have resurfaced, sometimes
in drug-resistant forms, by placing more laboratory
scientists and epidemiologists in developing countries.
More than thirty CDC field epidemiology-training
programs exist globally, but the Kenya initiative,
which will be housed within the Kenya Ministry of
Health to help ensure its continuation beyond the
four-year grant period, is the first to integrate
field epidemiology with a laboratory component.
"We are pleased to partner with CDC to begin this new effort to train health professionals from
developing countries in field and laboratory approaches to infectious disease prevention and
control," said Stephanie James, deputy director of the Ellison Medical Foundation. "The need
for this type of combined training was just emphasized in a recent Institute of Medicine study
on microbial threats to world health, so there is no question this is a very timely program."
