The Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation
in Little Rock has awarded $1.3 million to the
Butler Center for Arkansas Studies at the Central
Arkansas Library System for a project to create a comprehensive resource on the state's history and culture, Arkansas
Business reports. The Center plans to produce the Encyclopedia of Arkansas in three formats: a Web edition including text entries and photographs, illustrations,
maps, videos and audio clips; a CD-ROM for schools; and a two-volume print edition.
The seven-year grant will support construction of a Web site, author stipends, administrative and salary costs, and
ongoing evaluation of the center's Encyclopedia of Arkansas History & Culture project. Organizers of the project plan to
produce an educational CD-ROM, a two-volume print edition, and a Web site edition that includes text entries, photographs,
illustrations, interactive maps, and video and audio clips. It provides about 70 per cent of the funding needed for the initial
phase of the encyclopedia.
"We have been overwhelmed with the enthusiasm and support of Arkansans, and the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation is
helping us take a big step toward our goal of producing the definitive resource on our state's rich history and culture,"
said Tom W. Dillard, curator of the Butler Center and the project's editor-in-chief. "This grant provides a large portion
of the funds needed to produce the Web-based version of the Encyclopedia of Arkansas."
