The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina
Foundation has announced that it will provide $10 million over the next five years to strengthen and expand the
state's network of free clinics and pharmacies that serve the uninsured and underinsured.
The grant will be distributed by the North Carolina
Association of Free Clinics, which supports the state's fifty-seven free clinics and pharmacies through advocacy,
research, public relations, training, and technical assistance. The association projects that the funding will allow the
facilities to provide $150 million worth of health services, including 750,000 prescriptions, to more than three hundred
thousand uninsured patients annually by 2009. In 2002, the clinics provided $60 million in free health care to more than
125,000 patients, dispensing more than 350,000 prescriptions. In addition to adding services at existing clinics and
pharmacies, the grant will provide startup funding for twenty-eight new facilities. For more information about the North
Carolina Association of Free Clinics, see our

"Providing health care for the uninsured is crucial to the well-being of North Carolina, and it is central to the
mission of the BCBSNC Foundation," said foundation president and chairman Bob Greczyn. "This partnership will help free
clinics expand their scope statewide, providing quality health care to tens of thousands of North Carolinians."
