Grants That Make a Difference

"Grants that Make a Difference" highlights grants given to Southeastern organizations that have helped make a difference in people's lives. Getting the grant is only the beginning of the story. At least once a month, "Grants That Make a Difference" will profile these important grants and what their recipients are doing with them.

Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, announced in December the receipt of a $10.5 million gift from Gordon E. Inman, a prominent local entrepreneur and business leader. The grant will help pay for the construction of a new 100,000 square foot two-building health care education complex that will house the university’s College of Health Sciences and Nursing.

The college will be renamed the Gordon E. Inman College of Health Sciences and Nursing. The complex will include classrooms, office space, and a large community conference center.

“We are immensely grateful for Gordon’s generosity,” said university president Bob Fisher. “He has been a faithful and valued trustee and advisor to the university for many decades, and we are enormously fortunate to be able to expand opportunities for students interested in nursing or other healthcare careers. This will have a significant impact on our community that, like so many others in our country, continues to experience a nursing shortage. This donation for our new facility will allow Belmont to grow its nursing program to 600 students or almost triple its current enrollment.”

Inman’s fifty-year career included a range of activities, including residential and commercial real estate, hotel and shopping center development, financial services, communications and media. “I’ve always had a passion for Belmont because it is a Christian school with a commitment to excellence in education,” Inman said. “I appreciate the school’s dedication to the kind of practical and experiential learning that prepares its students for successful careers.”
