Grants That Make a Difference

"Grants that Make a Difference" highlights grants given to Southeastern organizations that have helped make a difference in people's lives. Getting the grant is only the beginning of the story. At least once a month, "Grants That Make a Difference" will profile these important grants and what their recipients are doing with them.

Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund The Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund has announced more than $750,000 in grants to help fund the global work of scientists whose work focuses on protecting wildlife and wild places.

The nearly fifty projects funded involve protecting and studying endangered species and their habitats in more than twenty-five countries. In addition, most programs include educational or community components to ensure long-term conservation success. This round of awards support a diverse array of projects, including: aquaculture research on the Queen Conch at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution in Florida; an initiative to match funds with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for the Perry Institute for Marine Science Caribbean Marine Research Center to help create marine protected areas; and, for the fourth year, DWCF is supporting Operation Migration, a team that leads juvenile Whooping Cranes with ultra-light aircraft on a 1,225-mile migration path from Wisconsin to Florida.

DWCF was established in 1995 as a global program for the study and protection of the earth's wildlife and ecosystems. It provides annual awards to U.S. nonprofit conservation organizations working alongside their peers in other countries. Each project is evaluated on specific criteria, including scientific methodologies, magnitude of need, involvement of partner organizations, ability to impact an area in the near-term and elements of public education and community involvement. The Fund includes contributions made by guests visiting the Walt Disney World Resort.

Since its inception, DWCF has contributed nearly $5 million to over 200 projects in 20 countries stretching from the Florida Keys to Kenya.
