Grants That Make a Difference

January 1, 2007

"Grants that Make a Difference" highlights grants given to Southeastern organizations that have helped make a difference in people's lives. Getting the grant is only the beginning of the story. At least once a month, "Grants That Make a Difference" will profile these important grants and what their recipients are doing with them.

The V Foundation for Cancer Research in Cary, North Carolina, has announced that effective with its new fiscal year October 1, 2006, 100 percent of all future donation revenue and the net proceeds from events will be used to fund cancer research and related programs.

Having successfully completed an endowment fund campaign, the foundation can now cover its annual operating expenses for the foreseeable future with investment income, allowing it to fund more cancer research grants. All grants are reviewed and selected by The V Foundation's Scientific Review Committee.

The foundation, which has awarded $8 million this year, makes three types of grants. The V Scholar grants are designed to identify and retain talented young investigators and further their careers. The V Foundation grant in translational cancer research facilitates the transition of projects from the laboratory to the clinic. And designated grants support projects in communities or regions local to where the funds originated.

"When donors are considering where to give their money and have it make an impact, the V Foundation's ability to give 100 percent of it to cancer research and related programs is very exciting," said foundation chair Bob Lloyd. "We are one of very few foundations that can make this statement. Donated money will not go to pay for administration and overhead; it will go to research, so that we can find cures for cancer. This is an extremely rewarding milestone for the V Foundation."

The V Foundation was founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano and has raised more than $60 million to fund cancer research grants nationwide.
