Grants That Make a Difference

"Grants that Make a Difference" highlights grants given to Southeastern organizations that have helped make a difference in people's lives. Getting the grant is only the beginning of the story. At least once a month, "Grants That Make a Difference" will profile these important grants and what their recipients are doing with them.

The Golden Leaf Foundation, a North Carolina nonprofit, has announced fifty-five grants totaling $7.37 million to further its mission of helping the state transition from a tobacco-based economy. The grants to organizations all over the state range from $5,000 to more than $500,000, including a $512,000 award to the Golden Leaf scholarship program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In addition to the UNC grant, the foundation awarded $155,000 in scholarship funding to North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, $530,000 to North Carolina State University for the development of new crops and other agricultural projects, $360,262 to the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation to support increased production of organic crops, cheese, and bee products in the state, and $140,000 to Durham Technical Community College for industrial systems technologies.

The foundation, which receives half the funds from North Carolina's settlement with cigarette manufacturers, also gives to organizations that support tourism. In that category, North Carolina Central University received $140,000 for a program to train displaced tobacco workers for jobs in the hospitality and tourism industry, while the North Carolina Arts Council received $250,000 for a number of tourism initiatives.

For a complete list of the 2003 grants awarded by the Golden Leaf Foundation, see their Web site.
