"Grants that Make a Difference" highlights grants given to Southeastern organizations that have helped make a difference in people's lives. Getting the grant is only the beginning of the story. At least once a month, "Grants That Make a Difference" will profile these important grants and what their recipients are doing with them.

The GE Fund, the
philanthropic arm of General Electric, the diversified technology and
financial services conglomerate, has awarded $1 million to Southside High
School in Atlanta to implement a comprehensive program to double the
percentage of graduating seniors headed for college by 2007. The grant is
the largest award the Fund has made this year and matches the largest
grant in its history.
The GE program aims to increase the percentage of Southside seniors
who graduate and then attend two- or four-year colleges and universities
or who enroll in technical institutions from 35 percent in 2002 to more
than 70 percent by 2007. The initiative has a number of key components,
including the continuation of an SAT prep program, the development of
performance incentive programs for students and teachers, the creation
of a tutorial program where top students at Southside tutor students at
King Middle School, and the development of a "vertical alignment" program
between teachers at Southside and those at King.
"This is an outstanding and generous donation to the future of Southside High School
students," said Atlanta Public Schools superintendent Dr. Beverly L. Hall. "General
Electric established a commitment to Southside, continued it over the past decade, and
this $1 million grant from the GE Fund means that the partnership will endure well into
the future."
