The Greater Atlanta Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) recently announced the selection of Atlanta construction executive Herman J. Russell as the 2006 Georgia Philanthropist of the Year. Mr. Russell will be honored at the annual National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon on Thursday, November 2. Also honored will be the Teen Volunter of the Year and civic leaders Linda and S. Stephen Selig, III, as the 2006 Georgia Volunteers of the Year.
Russell, nominated by Georgia State University, has given generously to the Atlanta community, particularly local youth. He believes that today's youth need strong positive role models and mentors. Through his Herman J. Russell Foundation, which focuses on entrepreneurship, mentoring and development in young people, Mr. Russell's philanthropy has impacted entrepreneurial programs at various colleges and universities, including Tuskegee University (his alma mater), Clark Atlanta University, Georgia State University and Morehouse College.
"With as vibrant a philanthropic community as we have in Atlanta, we could not be happier with the 2006 honorees," said Josh Newton, president of the Greater Atlanta Chapter of AFP.
This is the 23rd anniversary of National Philanthropy Day, and it is the first time that Kiwanis Club of Atlanta is the presenting sponsor for the celebration. This celebration is the only time throughout the year that organizations unite to honor the special donors and volunteers that make the community great.
