Atlanta Honors Glenn & Black for Community Contributions
Mr. Thomas Glenn, II, and Mr. Dameron Black, III, will be honored as the Philanthropist of the Year and the Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year, respectively, at the National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, November 16, 2004, at the Georgia World Congress Center.
While both men hail from families with longstanding philanthropic commitments to the Atlanta community, they also have demonstrated more hands-on involvement and have contributed to a more process and results-driven investment strategy. In doing so, the executives mirror trends in today’s philanthropy, which has helped influence a more business-like approach to nonprofit organizations.
Glenn, president of the Wilbur and Hilda Glenn Family Foundation, was nominated by The Westminster Schools and the Center for the Visually Impaired. The Westminster graduate approached his alma mater about incorporating philanthropy into the curriculum several years ago. He and wife Lou gave $5 million in 2003 to create the Wilbur and Hilda Glenn Institute for Philanthropy and Service Learning. (For additional information, see this month's
Grants That Make a Difference.)
Black, senior vice president of SunTrust Banks, Inc., chaired the Atlanta Speech School’s recent campaign, which surpassed its goal. He has served on other foundation and nonprofit boards.
