The Walton Family Foundation, started by the Walton family, owners of Bentonville-based Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., has established an art museum that will include the works of Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper and other American artists. Earlier this year, Alice Walton purchased the Asher B. Durand painting "Kindred Spirits" for the collection from the New York Public Library. Although Sotheby's, the library's agent, declined to confirm the exact purchase price, two experts, who spoke anonymously, said the price was more than $35 million.
The museum, Crystal Bridges, is expected to open in May 2009 in Bentonville; it takes its name from a glass-and-wood design that crosses a local stream. The museum will focus on the flow of America's history and heritage through the eyes of some of the nation's most influential artists.
The permanent collection, to be assembled by the Walton family, willl include paintings and sculptures by American artists from the Revolutionary period through the modern era. The museum will also feature temporary exhibits from national institutions.

museum's Web site.
