The Duke Endowment in Charlotte, North Carolina, has announced grants totaling more than $54 million to organizations in North and South Carolina.

The grants include $19.5 million to four colleges in the Carolinas, $21.1 million to hospitals and other healthcare organizations, $3.8 million for not-for-profit children's homes and programs that support child services, and $7.2 million for rural United Methodist churches and retired United Methodist pastors and their families.

"The $54 million is not extraordinary for the Duke Endowment. We regularly give about $100 million a year in the Carolinas; typically about half that amount is given in December," said Endowment president Elizabeth H. Locke. "What is unusual is that, despite the lagging economy, the Endowment has been able to keep up this level of grants."
