The Women's Impact Fund, a program of the Charlotte-based Foundation for the Carolinas, is gearing up to operate as a separate nonprofit starting in 2010 in partnership with the foundation, the Charlotte Business Journal reports.

Established in November 2003 to enable women to pool their charitable giving and get involved in local causes, the fund enlisted 158 members in its first year, each of whom gave $1,000. This year, with membership at more than 450 women, it has awarded a total of $443,500 in grants to five nonprofits. During its first four years, the fund awarded $1.4 million in grants, helping to fuel philanthropy in the region.

The fund's growing membership also has enabled it to provide volunteers, expertise, and staff to the organizations it supports. "[Women] want to be involved," said Judy Allison, retired director of community affairs for Wachovia Corp. and outgoing chair of the fund. "They want to be hands-on and...know what difference their investment is making. It's personal."
