Our Resources

In addition to our events and classes, we also offer a great deal of resources to guide your efforts to build your organization's capacity.

Foundation Center has a wealth of knowledge-building tools which are all available to you at no charge when you visit Foundation Center New York during our hours of operation—Tuesday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

These include:

  • Professional access to Foundation Directory Online (FDO): FDO makes it easy to turn foundations into funders. It's the only resource you need to search for the foundations most likely to give you grants and manage your prospects through to funding.
  • Other proprietary databases to help with your research such as: EBSCO Nonprofit Organization Resource Center for scholarly research, DonorSearch for individual prospecting, and LexisNexis Corporate Affiliations for researching corporate support.
  • Reference library and lending collection. Check out our collection here, or stop by our Center to browse first-hand.

Laptop Policy

Visitors are strongly encouraged to bring their own laptops or other handheld devices. We will also make a limited number of laptops available on a first-come, first-served basis in increments of two hours to ensure fair and equitable access for all.

WiFi Policy

Our WiFi network provides access to Foundation Directory Online ProfessionalFoundation Maps, and related databases.

  • Once you are logged in, the wireless connection is not encrypted. Therefore, we cannot guarantee the security of any personal information transmitted during your session. Users should avoid transmitting sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, passwords, Social Security Numbers, and other personal data.
  • The use of our wireless connection is entirely at the risk of the user; Foundation Center disclaims all liability for identify theft, loss of confidential information or damages resulting from that loss, and accepts no responsibility for any software downloaded/installed while on premises, including but not limited to malware and viruses.
  • Foundation Center staff can provide general instructions on how to connect to your wireless service but cannot troubleshoot connections or make any changes to your laptop or other wireless device.

Lending Program

Anyone who lives, works or studies in the five boroughs of New York City is eligible to borrow from our lending collection. To identify circulating items at the New York library, search the Catalog of Nonprofit Literature.

Book Lending Policy

  • Individuals must submit a completed and signed Lending Program Policy Agreement and present valid photo identification with proof of address before they will be allowed to check out items. 
  • Up to two items may be borrowed for two weeks and may be checked out any time during regular hours.
  • Items must be returned by closing time on the due date. If Foundation Center is closed on the due date, items must be returned by closing time on the next business day.
  • Foundation Center staff will notify borrowers by phone or e-mail when items are overdue.
  • If an item is lost, damaged, or not returned, the borrower will be sent an invoice for the full replacement cost, plus a $5 replacement fee. Until materials are returned or paid for, borrowing privileges will be suspended. Repeated losses or late returns may result in the permanent loss of borrowing privileges.
  • A valid photo identification card must be shown in order to check out books. If a current New York City address is not indicated on the photo ID, you will need to show a utility bill or other proof of a current local address. This may be a home, business, or college address, but your name must appear.
  • Provide a phone and/or e-mail address where you can be notified if materials are not returned.
  • Renewals: To ensure that others have a chance to use the collection, no immediate renewals will be granted but you may check the book out again after 48 hours.
