Transformational Growth Marks First Decade for Silicon Valley Community Foundation
New CF Insights report shows over $4 billion in grantmaking by Silicon Valley Community Foundation over its first 10 years, education and health top funding priorities.
New York, NY — March 15, 2017. CF Insights, a service of Foundation Center focused on data and research about the community foundation field, announces the release of Silicon Valley Community Foundation: 10 Years of Innovation and Impact, which explores growth and grantmaking data of the world's largest community foundation.
Celebrating its 10-year anniversary in 2017, Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) is notable for more than just its size and rapid growth; SVCF consistently innovates on how community foundations can serve donors and their communities, and drives conversation about the changing role of community foundations as philanthropic institutions, including the definition of "community" itself. The report illustrates changes in SVCF's financial assets, gifts, and grants over time, and the grantmaking priorities of the foundation and its donors. Key findings include:
- Since 2007, SVCF has grown 17% annually, compared to 5% for the community foundation field and 3% for the entire philanthropic sector
- Donor-advised funds represented half of SVCF's assets in 2007, but account for 80% today
- The geographic focus of SVCF's grantmaking reflects the diversity of its donors' interests and backgrounds, with nearly half of all giving directed to areas in the U.S. outside of the local Bay Area, and over $120 million focused internationally
"Looking at data on influential funders, such as Silicon Valley Community Foundation, not only allows us to better understand their activities, but also gives us insight into likely directions of the broader philanthropic sector," said Bradford K. Smith, president of Foundation Center.
Emmett D. Carson, Ph.D., CEO and president of SVCF, adds, "In our 10-year history, Silicon Valley Community Foundation has had a significant, positive impact on many challenges at home, across the country, and around the world. This impact would not be possible without the support of our generous individual and corporate donors and the dedication of nonprofit partners. Our trajectory of growth tells the story of a new Renaissance in American philanthropy in which Silicon Valley is helping to lead the way."
Additional insight into SVCF's first decade is shared through the recently released "The World is Home," which showcases interviews and reviews of the foundation's work and materials. Dr. Carson also published perspectives on the evolution of how community foundations should be defined in the GrantCraft leadership series paper 21st-Century Community Foundations: A Question of Geography and Identity.
