Philanthropy and the Social Economy: Blueprint 2017, the eighth annual industry forecast written by Stanford scholar and self-described philanthropy wonk, Lucy Bernholz, warns civil society about two trends it must address:

  • The boundaries between philanthropic and political activity are blurring as civil society's norms of privacy and anonymity are used to shield political activity, which should be transparent in a democracy
  • Government surveillance and the commercial ownership of civil society's digital infrastructure combine to threaten our rights to free expression and association

Central America received 1.1 percent of U.S. foundation funding for international causes in 2013, according to U.S. Foundation Funding for Central America in Context, a new fact sheet released by Foundation Center and Seattle International Foundation. Latin America, as a whole, received 9.4 percent of international grantmaking from U.S. foundations.

New Research Gives Clearest Picture Ever of Global Human Rights Funding

The 2016 edition of Advancing Human Rights: Update on Global Foundation Grantmaking provides a more comprehensive view of the human rights funding landscape than ever before. Released today by the International Human Rights Funders Group (IHRFG) and Foundation Center, the report analyzes 20,300 grants to 12,262 organizations worldwide in 2013. In total, 803 funders awarded $2.3 billion in funding for human rights — a 23 percent increase in giving between 2012 and 2013 among a consistent subset of funders. In addition to the report, the latest data have been added to the interactive Advancing Human Rights website.
